Foundational years
When children learn mathematics meaningfully, in a way which makes sense to them, then their foundations become strong and they are able to do problem solving in real life contexts as well deal with the operations with understanding.
The Foundational years can be divided into two broad age groups – Foundational Years Stage I for children 3-5 and Foundational Years Stage II for children age 5-7.
When children get sufficient opportunities to count and quantify objects in meaningful contexts then they develop basic numeracy which becomes the basis for learning mathematics meaningfully in the later years. Various activities with concrete materials which are engaging for children including those which are specially designed can play a pivotal role in the communication between teachers and children and between children themselves.
