You are here: Jodogyan > Mathematics
Mathematics has been feared by people over the centuries. Today also lakhs of children in our country fear mathematics. It is felt as a dry subject that few seem to love. Yet we feel that mathematics builds on something that we all possess – the sense of quantity. It leads to see beautiful patterns and symmetries in the world around us. It helps us to reason logically and consistently. This empowers us to look deep into the mysteries of the world – whether of astronomy or of genetics. It also helps us to participate in today’s world as responsible citizens –critically examining issues whether of global warming or of the increasing gap between rich and poor.
How do we make this birthright of every child a real possibility- that is the challenge.
We in Jodo Gyan feel that by changing the way we teach in the class, we can contribute to this process. We also need to get away from thinking of mathematics just as a collection of rules for addition, subtraction and other operations and an array of formulae- to start seeing it as a way of thinking, modelling and reasoning about the reality
